Doom Looms, Unrated & Extended

Doom_rock_urban_dvd_xlUniversal Studios Home Entertainment will release "Doom," the action-adventure flick starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson on February 7th in an Unrated Extended Edition, available in both widescreen and full screen versions.

An R-rated theatrical version will also be available (in full screen only).

Directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak and inspired by a bestselling videogame of the same name, "Doom" features fight sequences choreographed by Hong Kong martial arts master Dion Lam and innovative, state-of-the-art visual effects from the legendary Stan Winston Studios.

The film stars The Rock as the leader of the "Rapid Response Tactical Squad," a squadron of interplanetary Marines sent to investigate a remote Martian outpost. A frantic call for help from a remote research station on Mars sends a team of mercenary Marines into action.

Led by The Rock and Karl Urban, they descend into the Olduvai Research Station, where they find a legion of nightmarish creatures, lurking in the darkness, killing at will. Once there, the Marines must use an arsenal of firepower to carry out their mission: nothing gets out alive.

Both the Unrated and Rated versions of "Doom" will offer these extras:

Basic Training: Join The Rock and the rest of the cast as they train with the SAS.  Learn with the team how to load and fire their weapon and all the rigors of real basic training.

Rock Formation: Join make-up artist Jeff Dawn as he applies prosthetic make-up on The Rock for the final fight sequence with Karl Urban.

Master Monster Makers: In this short feature, we will go in-depth on the making of the creatures in Doom.  Join Stan Winston's creature team as they face the task of turning foam and rubber into terrifying monsters.

Doom Nation: This documentary feature will explore the worldwide phenomenon of Doom, the videogame franchise.  From a profile on the creator, John Carmack and designer, Tim Willits (names familiar as characters in the movie) to a look at the legions of fans who can't get enough of he world's most addictive videogame.

Doom 3 Xbox Demo

The Unrated Extended version of "Doom" will also have these additional bonus features:

First Person Shooter Sequence: Visual Effects Supervisor Jon Farhat directed this sequence and explains how the look and feel of the game was created on film.  This includes the entire 5:00 minute long version that was shortened for the final cut of the film.

Game On!:
A beginner's tour of locations, weapons, creatures and strategies of a "first person shooter," including tips and sidebars.

All versions of "Doom" will feature English, Spanish and French soundtracks with Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, English SDH and Spanish and French subtitles. The widesreen unrated version will have a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, while the full screen versions (both rated and unrated) will be formatted 1.33:1.

SRP is expected to be $29.98, while the actual price you pay for this heavily-discounted title should be no more than $17.00.

Family Fare Tops 2005 Charts

As the year draws to a close, Billboard magazine is reporting (via Reuters) that most of the top-selling DVDs for 2005 were family titles.

The widescreen edition of "The Incredibles" from Walt Disney Home Entertainment/Buena Vista Home Entertainment took the top spot. Number two is "Elf" from New Line Home Entertainment/Warner Home Video, while the third best-selling DVD is the full-screen edition of "The Incredibles."

The widescreen and full screen versions of "Shrek 2" (DreamWorks Home Entertainment/Universal Studios Home Video) took the number 5 and 8 spots and "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" (Warner Home Video) occupies the number 7 and 8 spots with its widescreen and full screen versions.

Rounding out the year's best-selling discs are two action films and a comedy: the widescreen Special Edition of "Spider-Man 2" (Sony) was number 6, the Special Extended Edition of "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" (New Line/WHV) was number 9 and Fox Home Video's "Napoleon Dynamite" landed the number 4 spot.

Nifty Ways To Lose Your Lover

How_to_lose_lover_dvd_xlA young writer who has become disenchanted with the LA scene decides to pack up and head east just as he meets the girl of his dreams in "How to Lose Your Lover," a romantic comedy available on DVD March 14th from New Line Home Entertainment.

Knowing that - ultimately - his new relationship will be doomed to fail just like all his others, Owen (Paul Schneider) “fast tracks” the relationship and proceeds to take Val (Jennifer Westfeldt) on a series of “no-win” dates in a desperate race to see to see if he can figure out how to lose his lover.

A favorite at the Tribeca and Austin Film Festivals, "How to Lose Your Lover" also stars Poppy Montgomery, Tori Spelling and Fred Willard.

Special features will include deleted scenes and commentary with writer-director Jordan Hawley, producer J. Todd Harris and Willard.  The film will be presented in 16 x 9 widescreen (1.85:1), with an English language soundtrack in Dolby Digital 5.1 and Stereo Surround Sound 2.0, with English and Spanish subtitles and closed captions.

Retail price has been set at $19.97, but shop around and you can find it for about fourteen dollars.

13 and 30 is Now Fun and Flirty

13_going_30_fun_flirty_xl_1Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release a new "13 Going On 30: Fun & Flirty Edition" on February 7th.

Starring Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo, the film is a romantic comedy about a typical pre-teen girl who goes from geeky to gorgeous overnight. With the help of some magic wishing dust, 13 year-old Jenna Rink (Garner) becomes 30 and gorgeous overnight, with everything she ever wanted, except for her best friend Matt (Ruffalo).

So, as grown woman, she sets out to create some magic of her own so she can help the little girl inside find the true love she left behind.

This new "Fun and Flirty" Edition will have all of the original DVD’s special features, but will add a few new ones including an “80s Teen Fashion Flashback” featurette and an alternative beginning and ending. And - ohmigawd - it'll be packaged in a bubble-gum scented box with lots of sparkling glitter.

This will be a widescreen disc in Dolby, dubbed and subtitled, but specific details are not yet available. SRP has been set at $19.94, which means the "street price" should be about $14.

Narnia News

On Christmas Eve, the folks over at UltimateDisney.com announced that "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" will be released in three editions when it comes to DVD next year, probably in April:

"...separate but similarly loaded 16 x 9-enhanced 2.35:1 widescreen and 1:33:1 cropped editions and a more collectible deluxe edition which will carry a list price of $10 or so more than the studio's standard $29.99 tag."

Site notes that "more specific details and a firm date likely won't be announced until sometime in the first two months of 2006."

Meanwhile, over at NarniaWeb.com (we kid you not), they're reporting "that the DVD’s tentative release date has been set for Easter 2006" and further speculate "that the release date would be April 11, the Tuesday before Easter."

The film - adapted from the C.S. Lewis fantasy novel - has been a huge success, overtaking "King Kong" at the box office and earning more than 180 million dollars since its debut December 9th.

Panther Returns After Long Absence

Return_pink_panther_sellersPeter Sellers plays the indestructible, inept and irrepressible Inspector Jacques Clouseau in Blake Edwards’ "The Return of the Pink Panther," the second-highest-grossing film in the Pink Panther movie franchise.

This third teaming of Edwards and Sellers on a Pink Panther film has not been available on DVD for several years, and is not included in any Pink Panther boxed set collections. Fans can now finally complete their Pink Panther film collection with this 1975 comedy favorite, which is being released to coincide with this winter’s theatrical release of the new Pink Panther movie starring Steve Martin.

(Watch for more Pink Panther release announcements very soon. It seems that everybody wants to re-release their Pink Panther library titles to capitalize on the publicity for the new flick.)

With an all-new digitally re-mastered picture, "The Return of the Pink Panther" will be available on DVD from Universal Studios Home Entertainment on January 10th.

The movie costars Panther regulars Herbert Lom (as the high-strung Chief Inspector Charles Dreyfus), Burt Kwouk (karate-chopping Cato Fong), Andre Maranne (beleaguered Sgt. François Duval), Graham Stark, Herb “Serge” Tanney, and of course (in the witty credits sequences) the animated renditions of the Pink Panther and Inspector Clouseau. Joining the cast for this outing are Christopher Plummer and Catherine Schell.

The film will be presented in anamorphic widescreen (2:35:1) and while the picture may have been remastered the audio will still be just plain old Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo. Subtitles will be available in English, Spanish and French. The Suggested Retail Price for "The Return of the Pink Panther" will be $14.98 (with the street price a more realistic $10).

Strike Up The Band, Baby

Baby_einstein_orchestra_xlThe newest DVD from the Baby Einstein Company -  "Meet the  Orchestra: First Instruments" - arrives on DVD March 7th.  Recommended for children 1 year and up, the disc will provide little ones with a playful introduction to musical instruments and the sounds they make.

Tykes develop an ear for music at an early age, and Baby Einstein is known for creatively exposing babies to music from their point of view by featuring classical music re-orchestrated for young ears in all of its titles.

Between 3 to 6 months, little ones enjoy soft, soothing music and even begin moving to music.  From 6 to 9 months, they begin creating their  own form of music by clapping their hands and banging on objects. By year one, toddlers are  beginning to identify specific sounds and musical notes and "Meet the Orchestra" builds on their natural curiosity about the sounds they hear and the objects that make them.

Featuring string, brass, wind and percussion sections of an orchestra, with sights and sounds of 22 instruments including trumpets, saxophones, violins and tambourines, "Meet the Orchestra" will engage children and parents as they discover the benefits that music has to offer including movement and self expression.

The SRP for this DVD has been set at $19.99, but shop around and you should find it for $12 or less.

Two New "Best Of" DVDs Prove SNL is Swell

Snl_best_david_spade_xlThe DVD debut of “Saturday Night Live: The Best of David Spade" and “Saturday Night Live: The Best of Alec Baldwin" on January 24th marks a homecoming of sorts for the show to NBC Universal.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment - a unit of NBC Universal - has been granted distribution rights for the popular DVD compilations comprised of scenes from the hit NBC latenight series.

Since its debut in 1975, “Saturday Night Live” has been the gold standard for edgy, irreverent comedy on television, launching the careers of some of the brightest comedic lights in the last 30 years.

Created by Lorne Michaels, who also serves as executive producer and writer, the program has won 18 Emmy® Awards and been nominated for more than 80. With 7 million viewers tuning in each week, the late-night comedy showcase has become a show business institution, and one of the most enduring and celebrated comedy franchises in television history.

During his six years as a cast member and writer on “SNL,” David Spade created an unforgettable gallery of wisecracking characters and acerbic catchphrases that made him one of “SNL’s” favorite stars.

Currently hosting his own talk show on Comedy Central, “The Showbiz Show with David Spade,” Spade’s well known sketches included on this new DVD compilation are: "The Receptionist," "Gap Girls" and "Flight Attendant."

Snl_best_alec_baldwin_xl_1Alec Baldwin - in addition to being a fine movie actor, is also one of “SNL’s” funniest and most frequent hosts, displaying an unexpected flair for scene-stealing and an affinity for lampooning movie star foibles.

"The Best of Alec Baldwin" DVD  showcases comic high points from his twelve appearances on the show in some of the most memorable sketches in the show’s 30-year history. Sketches included are "Scout Master," "French Teacher" and "Pete Schwetty."

In addition to the classic sketches, the Baldwin DVD will include the following bonus features: a photo gallery from the shows, scenes from “SNL” final dress rehearsals and exclusive audio commentary.

Extras on "The Best of David Spade" will include an interview with Spade from “Late Night with Conan O’Brian," outtakes, an official “SNL” photo gallery and exclusive audio commentary.

Both discs will be presented in full screen, with Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo in English. Each will carry a Suggested Retail Price of $19.98, but the street price should be around fourteen bucks.

Netflix and Blockbuster: Trading Places

Reuters reports (via cnet) that Netflix and Blockbuster have traded places this year in terms of market dominance and valuation:

When the head of Netflix said rival Blockbuster threw "everything but the kitchen sink at us," the world's largest video-rental chain responded by sending him a kitchen sink.

The message from last January's interchange was clear: Blockbuster, with $6 billion in 2004 revenue and 5,500 domestic stores, intended to own online DVD rental, an $8 billion industry pioneered by Netflix.

"This year was about Blockbuster taking a run at us," Netflix Chief Executive Reed Hastings recently told Reuters at the company's Beverly Hills offices. "They chopped price. They emptied their balance sheet."

But despite Blockbuster's costly offensive, Hastings said Netflix was on track for net subscriber additions of 1.5 million for 2005 for a total of 4.1 million--the midpoint of its target range.

Meanwhile, Blockbuster, which has been roiled by management and debt problems, saw the subscriber base at its 16-month-old online service stall at 1 million.

In addition, Netflix, carrying no debt, is now valued at $1.5 billion, while Blockbuster, with over a billion dollars in debt is now valued at $684 million.

And with all that debt - and declining rental earnings at their stores - Blockbuster may close some of their retail locations.  Fewer stores may mean that more people go online for their DVD rentals, which is good for Netflix, particularly with stepped up marketing planned for the 1st Quarter of '06.

But 2005 was also a year of setbacks for Netflix, which postponed plans to enter the UK online DVD rental market after Amazon did so and which canceled its plans for a movie download service after it was unable to acquire film rights from major Hollywood studios.

Things picked up last May, when Wal-Mart gave up the ghost on their own fledgling DVD rental operation and agreed to hand over the few subscribers they had to Netflix in a promotional arrangement. And now, the Netflix domination of the online DVD rental market is making it look increasingly likely that Amazon will not launch its service in the USA.

All of this is great for Netflix, but it does leave Karina over at Cinematical to wonder if Netflix will kill the video star, or more accurately, your local video store.

Dog and Duck Run Amuck

Goof_troop_dvd_1_disney_xl_1Walt Disney Home Entertainment presents "Quack Pack" and "Goof Troop," two animated collections available on DVD for the first time on February 14th.

Whether diving for buried treasure or appearing in the “World’s Most Painful Home Videos,” Goofy and Max know that no matter how badly things go awry, they will always have each other. The three episodes featured here in Volume One are "Slightly  Dingy," "Wrecks, Lies & Videotape" and "Shake, Rattle & Goof."

Quack_pack_dvd_1_disney_xl_1Donald Duck stars in "Quack Pack" and his life is soon turned upside down when his mischievous teenage nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie move in and embark on a series of wacky adventures.  Join the boys as they unlock a secret TV channel that transports treasures over the airwaves, and make an appointment with a mysterious dentist and his mind-controlling braces. Each DVD will carry a Suggested Retail Price of $14.99 (with the street price hovering around eleven dollars). The shows will be presented in full screen format (1.33:1) with Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo and English and French audio.

Bless Me Father, For I Have Fast-Forwarded

Hey, if you're reading The DVD Dossier on Christmas Day, you really need to get some new friends or some more interesting relatives. Or perhaps you just have some time on your hands because you didn't have to go to church...

This story
from the Associated Press (via KGW.com) details how some churches are canceling mass today and giving away interactive DVDs to their members, so that they can conduct their own Christmas service at home.

One such church is Northshore Christian of Everett, Washington, where their initial order of 1,000 DVDs had to be increased by 50% to meet the demand.

"We're not canceling church. We're taking it out of our four walls," said Christina Bergevin, Northshore's music director, who helped create the kit.

The DVD was filmed in Rev. Ken Long's living room as he sat in a leather recliner in front of the fireplace.

Besides viewing the disc, which includes meditative music and an abbreviated sermon, congregants can unroll and read tiny scrolls that describe spiritual meanings behind familiar Christmas symbols, such as candles, wreaths and candy canes. They can take Communion, express thankfulness and say a Christmas prayer. The entire service takes 30 to 60 minutes.

...Northshore member Fred Sirianni of Marysville said the at-home service provides a non-threatening way for members to present their faith with friends and relatives who otherwise might not "darken the door of the church."

This hasn't caught on here in the New York area, as far as I know. But we do have one church - Our Lady of New Releases - that rents DVDs. The service is evidently free, but the late fees run 10% of your earnings.

Deer Sequel is Near

Bambi_2_ii_disney_dvd_xlWalt Disney Home Entertainment will bring "Bambi II," a sequel to the immortal classic “Bambi” direct to DVD (and not to theaters) on February 7th.

This animated adventure stars Bambi, Thumper, Flower  and all of “Bambi’s” classic characters, and introduces an exciting new cast of characters  (including Thumper’s rambunctious sisters) in a story  the entire family will enjoy.

With new songs and animation in the tradition of the original film, "Bambi II" is a vibrant story about the magical journey of growing up, and a father and son’s growing bonds with one another.

In the new film, Bambi reunites with his father, The Great Prince (voiced by Patrick Stewart), who must now raise Bambi and teach him the ways of the forest.  But the proud parent soon discovers that there is much that he can learn from his spirited son.

Bonus materials include “Bambi Trivia Tracks,” “Thumper’s Hurry & Scurry” game and “The Legacy Continues” featurette on the making of the film.

"Bambi II" will be a widescreen release (1.78:1), with English and French audio and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. SRP will be $29.99, but expect to pay no more than $21.00 in the real world.

65 Million Dollar Man

It seems like we've run a gazillion stories about "The 40-Year Old Virgin" in the past week or so (actually, there have only been three).

But here's one more.

Universal reports that they sold 3.7 combined DVD and VHS units (hey, remember VHS?) in the first week since the DVD's December 13th street date. This means consumers spent nearly $65 million on the hit comedy in its first six days in stores.

It's strongest competition?

Fox's "Fantastic Four," which it outsold by nearly three to one.

PSP Enhanced By Lap Dance?

Bouncy_lap_dance_umdAdult DVD Empire sent out a press release today saying that they were offering the "first-ever" Region 1 (USA and Canada) "mature-rated" UMD for the Sony Play Station Portable handheld entertainment device.

Ah, yes, well it was bound to happen... frankly, I'm shocked it took so long. After all, it was way back in June that a Sony PR flack, anticipating the development, issued the following statement:

"It is utterly undesirable, but we cannot stop software makers from selling such videos."

Look, it's no great secret that pornography sells - softcore, hardcore and inbetween - and that porn was largely responsible for the growth of the VHS video industry back in the 80's and the DVD player in the 90's. So, it's no surprise that adult movies would find their way to new formats - like the PSP, mobile phones and the iPod - rather quickly.

But the last time we checked, you hold and control the PSP with two hands, so we're just wondering how you... oh, never mind.

In any case "Virtual Lap Dances #1" is from an outfit named "Bouncy Pictures" and it's now shipping at Adult DVD Empire. For the record, the release proudly proclaims that the film contains "full nudity" and features "12 girls performing lap dances in the first-person point of view."

By the way, UMDs - which, to my knowledge have still not been found in Iraq - are the latest in optical storage media and are designed for high speed and efficient delivery of digital content. Developed by Sony and initially only for use with the Sony PSP, "Universal Media Discs" offer a broad range of content including games, music videos, movies, sports programs and now, adult entertainment.

In the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that The DVD Dossier is an affiliate of DVD Empire  (and - by association - Adult DVD Empire), so if you happen to purchase this title we'll make a few cents to help defray our operating costs (just as we do when you shop through Amazon or B&N or Wal-Mart or any of our other lapdance-less merchants).

LaBeouf is No Duffer

Greatest_game_ever_dvd_xl"The Greatest Game Ever Played," an inspirational film based on the true story of Francis Ouimet, premieres on DVD April 11th.

A young amateur golfer from a working class family, Francis - played by Shia  LaBeouf - is caught between a world of hardship and a beckoning life of privilege.

Yet Francis proves his unfailing will and his ability to succeed.  He beats the odds and rises in the ranks of golf, finally facing off with his greatest idol and competitor, defending British champion  Harry Vardon, in the 1913 U.S. Open.

The 20-year-old Ouimet shocks the golf world when, flanked by his 10-year-old caddie, he defeats his idol in the unlikely match-up: “the ingenue versus the seasoned champ.”

The DVD from Walt Disney Pictures will include featurettes on the true story’s real people, including an interview with Francis Ouimet and director and screenwriter commentary.  "The Greatest Game Ever Played" was written by Mark Frost (based on his book) and directed by actor Bill Paxton.

80's Sitcom: 3 Kids, Dad and Mom

Growing_pains_cameron_dvd_1Warner Home Video will release the First Season of the heartwarming 80"s family comedy, "Growing Pains," on February 7th.

"Growing Pains" stars teen idol Kirk Cameron (Mike Seaver), Alan Thicke (Jason Seaver), Joanna Kerns (Maggie Seaver), Tracey Gold (Carol Seaver) and Jeremy Miller (Ben Seaver). The show follows the story of the Seavers, a contemporary couple living in Long Island, NY with their three children.

Maggie Seaver, the matriarch of the household has recently rejoined the workforce as a journalist leaving her husband Jason, a practicing psychiatrist, to juggle his responsibilities to his patients and his three children by working from home.

Mike, the eldest child, is a charming dare-devil and the most trying Seaver child in the bunch. Whether its girls, dirt bikes or The Boss, Mike uses his disarming smile to finagle his way into trouble. Carol, the middle child, is Mike’s complete opposite—a straight “A” student with a good head on her shoulders, while Ben, the youngest child, is a sweet kid who emulates his older brother whenever he gets a chance.

"Growing Pains" originally aired on ABC from September 1985 to April 1992 and went on to become a very successful and popular family comedy for seven seasons. Prior to its release on DVD, "Growing Pains" aired in syndication on The Disney Channel and ABC Family.

The 4-Disc set will feature the Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated series’ first 22 episodes.

The popular sitcom’s premiere season will also include scenes from the show’s un-aired pilot episode (with a different actress - Elizabeth Ward - in the role of "Carol"), a gag reel and a special Seaver family reunion, in which the cast reunites to reminisce about the show's successful seven-year run.

Expect this new boxed set to preserve the shows in all their full screen glory, with an English soundtrack (Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono) and subtitles available in English, Spanish and French.

"Growing Pains" will retail for $29.98, but you should be able to find it for less than twenty dollars.

Dossier on Messier

Messier_leader_champion_xl_1The life and storied career of one of the premiere hockey players of all time will be celebrated on January 10th when Warner Home Video and NHL Productions release "Mark Messier: Leader, Champion & Legend."

From his childhood in Alberta, Canada to his ascent to the very top of the NHL, Mark Messier’s life is chronicled in this new DVD.  Included will be game footage, clips from his Stanley Cup victories, classic moments, interviews with friends and family and behind the scenes footage, all capturing the greatness of “The Captain" and his impact on the game of hockey.

The disc will retail for $12.98 (shouldn't they have made that $11 in his honor?) ...in any case, not to worry - the actual street price should be only nine dollars.
