Ritchie's Psychological Switchie

"Revolver," a new thriller from director Guy Ritchie, will be released on DVD March 18th from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

A sleek and edgy film about mastering the rules of the game, "Revolver" features the classic breed of fast-talking, sharp-suited gangsters one might expect to populate a Guy Ritchie film, but with a psychological twist you're probably not expecting at all. The film has an all-star cast of gangster movie icons, including Jason Statham, Ray Liotta, Vincent Pastore and Outkast's Andre Benjamin.

Just out of prison, Jake Green (Statham) is a hotshot gambler, but he's rarely allowed to play in any casino because he always wins. When Jake is invited to a private game with Macha (Liotta), a crime boss and local casino owner, he is expected to lose.

But Jake isn't afraid of Macha, and not only beats him in a quick game of chance, but takes every possible opportunity to insult the man. Jake leaves the game, and Macha puts out the order for a hit on Jake, who ends up working for and being protected by a pair of loan sharks, Avi and Zack, who are out to take Macha down.

Bonus materials will include "The Concept," a featurette containing interviews with Ritchie and editor James Herbert; the featurette "Revolver: Making the Music" and the behind-the-scenes featurette "The Game: The Making of Revolver." Also included will be alternate opening and ending sequences, deleted scenes, a photo gallery, and audio commentary with the director.

Gangsta Chap

"American Gangster," inspired by a true story, will arrive on DVD February 19th from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe portray one Harlem’s most notorious crime bosses and the outcast cop who pursues him, ultimately leading to a climactic confrontation that alters the destiny of an entire generation in New York City.

Directed by Ridley Scott and produced by Brian Grazer and Scott, "American Gangster" boasts an all-star cast including Josh Brolin, Ruby Dee, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Chiwetel Ejiofor, Armand Assante, Carla Gugino, and the rap artists Common, RZA and Tip “T.I.” Harris.

The film will be available in a 2-Disc Extended Edition that will include an unrated, extended version of the film along with over 18 additional minutes and an alternate ending plus the original theatrical film.

In addition, the "American Gangster 3-Disc Collector’s Edition," available for a limited time only, will include over five hours of bonus features, a 32-page collectible book and the opportunity to download a digital copy of the unrated, extended film.

Also available the same day will be "Gangsters: The Ultimate Film Collection," a 9-Disc set containing four of Hollywood’s most iconic gangster films: "American Gangster," "Scarface," "Casino" and "Carlito’s Way."

The Suggested Retail Price will be $29.98 for the 2-Disc version and $34.98 for the 3-Disc version . We think these will be available in stores, however, for about $20.00 and $28.00, respectively. An  HD DVD version will also be available ($39.98 SRP) for about $28.00.

Special Edition Treatment Applied To "Bonnie and Clyde"

"Bonnie and Clyde," starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway and directed by Arthur Penn - a film considered to be one of the most influential in the history of American cinema - will be released on March 25th by Warner Home Video in two new DVD editions and in high definition.

The standard definition editions offered will be a 2-Disc Special Edition and, available for a limited time only, an "Ultimate Collector’s Edition." Both will be completely remastered from the original elements, and both will boast more than three hours of new bonus content, highlighted by “Revolution! The Making of Bonnie and Clyde,” an all new in-depth commemorative documentary.

Also included will be the History Channel’s “Love & Death: The Story of Bonnie and Clyde” (a look at the lives of the real Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow) as well as Warren Beatty wardrobe tests and additional scenes, both newly discovered.

The "Bonnie and Clyde Ultimate Collector’s Edition" will also contain collectible memorabilia, with a 36-page hardcover book of behind-the-scenes photos, a 24-page reproduction of the original 1967 press book and a special mail-in poster offer.

James Woods Delivers The Goods

The First Season of “Shark," one of last Fall’s surprise TV hits, will come to DVD October 2nd, distributed by Fox Home Entertainment. 

James Woods stars as top-notch celebrity defense attorney Sebastian Stark a.k.a. “Shark,” a nickname earned through his merciless style of practicing law. 

When a simple twist of fate forces him to question his methods, Stark finds himself on the opposing team, working as a prosecutor for the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office and their newly formed High Profile Crime Unit. Attorneys Dispense Good Sense As They Offer Defense

Critically-acclaimed for its portrayal of defense attorneys striving to lead ethical lives in an unethical arena, "The Practice" will makes Its long awaited DVD debut on June 12th, distributed by From Fox Home Entertainment.

From David E. Kelley - the creative mind behind "Boston Legal," "Ally McBeal," "Picket Fences," and "L.A. Law" - the courtroom drama premiered in 1997 and  offered a realistic and gritty look into the actual practice of law.

The Boston-based series ran for eight seasons and featured an all-star ensemble cast including Dylan McDermott, Michael Badalucco, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Steve Harris, Camryn Manheim, Kelli Williams and Lara Flynn Boyle.

The series' First Season earned an Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama, as well as wins for Camryn Manheim for Outstanding Supporting Actress and John Laroquette for Outstanding Guest Actor. Kelley also received an Emmy nomination in the Best Writing category for his incendiary episode "Betrayal."

"The Practice" Volume One " will be a 4-Disc collection that will include all 13 episodes from the First Season, as well as a "Setting Up "The Practice"' featurette with new on-camera interviews with Kelley and Executive Producer Robert Breech.

Teens Engage In Disorderly Conduct As They Self-Destruct

"Alpha Dog," a film inspired by a real-life shocking story, will come to DVD on May 1st from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. The film will be available on standard definition DVD (in both widescreen and full screen versions) as well as on an HD-DVD Combo Disc, which will include both standard and hi def versions of the film on a single disc.

"Alpha Dog" delivers an emotional gut-punch with its gritty portrait of a group of suburban teens spiraling toward self-destruction. The powerful young ensemble cast includes Justin Timberlake, Emile Hirsch, Anton Yelchin, Shawn Hatosy, Ben Foster, Dominique Swain, Fernando Vargas, Olivia Wilde and Lukas Haas, supplemented by Bruce Willis and Sharon Stone as the adults who fail to provide a moral center to their kids' world of privilege.

As the party winds down, the crew realizes the stunt that started as a lark could land them in prison for life. Seeing no way out of the mess he’s created, Johnny makes a tragic decision that changes all of their lives forever.

In "Alpha Dog," writer/director Nick Cassavetes has created a raw, explosive and compelling portrait of a new “lost generation."

Paramount Home Entertainment will bring the Second Season of "Twin Peaks" to DVD on April 3rd.

Created by David Lynch and Mark Frost, the show is set in the fictional town of "Twin Peaks" in northeast Washington State and tells the story of FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlin) and his investigation of the murder of a popular local teenage schoolgirl, Laura Palmer.

The Depiction Is Fiction, But It's Done With Great Conviction

I suppose we'll always remember exactly where we were and what we were doing when "Death of a President" was released. One of the most controversial films in years, the film will arrive on DVD April 3rd, distributed by Lionsgate Home Entertainment. 

Conceived as a fictional TV documentary broadcast in 2008, the film reflects on a monstrous and cataclysmic event: the assassination of President George W. Bush on October 19th, 2007.   

Winner of the International Critics' Prize at the Toronto Film Festival, this provocative political thriller combines archival footage and carefully composed interviews that dramatize the fictional event. The film doesn't advocate violence as many have suggested; it attempts to demonstrate its pernicious effects.

"Death of a President" was shown widely in Europe, but proved to be too controversial for most U.S. movie theatres and television networks.

Special features will include audio commentary from director Gabriel Range, editor Brand Thumim, co-producer/co-writer Simon Finch and line producer Donall McCusker, as well as on-camera interviews with the filmmakers.

The film will be presented on DVD in widescreen.

Man Loses His Way In L.A.

"Harsh Times," a gritty action-packed look at loyalty and ambition hits the streets next Tuesday, March 13th, distributed by Genius Products and The Weinstein Company.

The film marks the directorial debut of writer David Ayer and features a tour-de-force performance from Christian Bale as a trained killer, an ex-soldier who struggles to re-enter civilian society and, unable to get a job with the LAPD, drifts into a life of petty crime, drugs, and violence.

Set against the urban backdrop of South Central Los Angeles, the film also stars Eva Longoria and Freddy Rodriguez.

The DVD of "Harsh Times" includes seven deleted scenes and feature commentary by David Ayer.

McCann Is The Voice Of Secret Agent Man

BCI Eclipse and Hearst Entertainment will bring the classic King Features animated series "Cool McCool" to DVD March 13th, to be released under BCI's Ink & Paint brand.

The series, from "Batman" creator Bob Kane, was seen on NBC from 1966 - 1968 and has Cool facing down some of the most heinous villains in animation history including Hurricane Harry, The Rattler, Jack-In-The-Box, The Owl, Dr. Madcap and Greta Ghoul. And Cool does it all on behalf of his company "Secret, Inc." and his boss Number One.

This Collector's Edition of 20 episodes is hosted by Chuck McCann, who provides the majority of voices in "Cool McCool."

Fighting Wars, Settling Scores

MTI Home Video releases the crime drama "Machine" today.

Vic, an ex mercenary turned hardened criminal and his partner Frank survive in LA's underground. They spend each day immersed in a cesspool of ruthless crime lords, dirty cops and desperate drug dealers.

Their goal is simple... work both sides of the street and grab as much cash as possible. It's a fine idea until all factions are entwined in their plot and the result turns into a brutal explosion of evil versus evil.

"Machine" stars Michael Madsen, Neal McDonough, James Russo, Lisa Arturo and Michael Lazar, who also wrote and and directed the film.

On DVD, "Machine" is presented in full screen with audio in English, along with Spanish subtitles.

The only special feature is an audio commentary from Lazar, unless you count cast biographies and interactive menus (we don't).

Kyra Sedgwick Plays One Slick Dick

Season Two of the powerful police drama, "The Closer," will arrive on DVD May 29th from Warner Home Video.

The 4-Disc collection will feature all 14 episodes from the series’ Second Season, along with bonus materials, and will carry a Suggested Retail Price of $39.98. (The "street price" should be lower, about $28.00.)

Television’s next great detective, Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson - played by Golden Globe Award-winner and Emmy nominee Kyra Sedgwick -  has an offbeat personality, a tough-as-nails approach and a track record as one of the country’s leading investigators.

Mob Drama Once Commended, Now Extended

The gangster film "Donnie Brasco," starring Al Pacino and Johnny Depp, will return to DVD on May 8th in an all-new extended cut from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, with 20 minutes of never-before-seen footage added back into the film.

Originally released theatrically in 1997, "Donnie Brasco" opened to critical acclaim, went on to gross over $41 million at the box office and was nominated for numerous awards. the film was written by Paul Attanasio, was directed by Mike Newell and also stars Michael Madsen, Bruno Kirby, James Russo and Anne Heche.

Posing as jewel broker Donnie Brasco, FBI agent Joseph D. Pistone (Depp) is granted entrance into the violent mob family of aging hit man Lefty Ruggiero (Pacino). When his personal and professional lives collide, Pistone jeopardizes his marriage, his job and, ultimately, the gangster/mentor he has come to respect and admire.

In a case of mistaken identity, Cedric the Entertainer finds himself in a unusually messy situation in the action comedy "Code Name: The Cleaner," which will arrive on DVD April 24th from New Line Home Entertainment.

Jake, a mild-mannered janitor, gets in over his head when he is duped into believing that he is an undercover agent - his code name: “The Cleaner” - who subconsciously holds a key piece of information that could expose an arms conspiracy involving the CIA and FBI.

Good Cop & Bad Cop Could Be The Same Cop

One of the most unpredictable and gripping cop dramas on television - and FX’s longest-running original series - "The Shield" will return to DVD on March 27th with the release of Season Five.

Starring Emmy Award winner Michael Chiklis, the series redefines good and evil with a gritty, nuanced examination of life as a cop. Played out in a tough, morally ambiguous world in which the line between good and bad is crossed everyday, “The Shield” follows Detective Vic Mackey (Chiklis) as he's brought face-to-face with his past actions.

Hailed by critics as the series’ best year to date, Season Five was highlighted by the addition of Forest Whitaker into a special starring role as Internal Affairs investigator Jon Kavanaugh, who comes to "The Barn" with the sole intent to bring down Mackey and his Strike Team.

Prime-Time Pioneer Made Gender Stereotypes Disappear

“Cagney & Lacey,” the landmark TV drama that redefined pop-culture gender roles, will make its long-awaited DVD debut on May 8th, distributed by MGM Home Entertainment. 

Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the stereotype-shaking series will be a 4-Disc “Cagney & Lacey: Season One" boxed set, each episode of which demonstrates how this prime-time pioneer retained its femininity while placing its female heroes in situations typically dominated by men. 

“Cagney & Lacey” teams Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless as New York detectives whose opposing personalities and disparate crime-fighting styles mesh to form one of the most memorable duos in TV history.  Making its debut in 1982, “Cagney & Lacey” was canceled after just the first season, but a letter-writing campaign brought the two female cops back to the network’s schedule. 

Validating the fans’ faith in the series, “Cagney & Lacey” went on to earn 36 Emmy nominations and 14 wins during its run, including two wins for Outstanding Drama Series, as well as four Best Actress wins for Daly and two for Gless.

Over its six seasons, the show tackled controversial, hot–button social issues that had mostly been taboo on TV, including abortion, date rape and urban race relations.  Featuring the first 22 episodes, “Cagney & Lacey: Season One" will carry a Suggested Retail Price of $39.98, but most stores will be selling this for about $28.00.

The show will be presented in its original full screen aspect ratio on four dual-sided discs with audio in English (Mono), along with English and Spanish subtitles. Included will be a new two-part documentary about the groundbreaking show.

"The Last King of Scotland" will debut on DVD April 17th from Fox Home Entertainment.

Based on Giles Foden’s award-winning debut novel of the same name, "The Last King of Scotland" stars Oscar-nominee Forest Whitaker - who has already received many honors (including a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award) for his performance as the charismatic, yet psychopathic Ugandan dictator, Idi Amin.

The film follows Amin’s rise to power and subsequent fall from grace chronicled from the perspective of his personal physician, a young Scotsman blinded by Amin’s charisma and who ultimately must confront both the reality of Amin's mad dictatorship and face the consequences of his own actions.

Boasting gritty and realistic direction from documentary filmmaker Kevin MacDonald and a versatile supporting cast that includes James McAvoy, Gillian Anderson and Kerry Washington, "The Last King of Scotland" is both a powerful and shocking drama and a brilliant thriller.

Special features will include audio commentary by MacDonald, seven deleted scenes with optional director commentary, a “Capturing Idi Amin” documentary and a Forest Whitaker featurette.

The film will be available in separate widescreen and full screen versions with audio in English (Dolby Surround 5.1) as well as in Spanish and French (Dolby Surround), along with  English, Spanish and French subtitles.

The Suggested Retail Price will be $29.98, but this title should be widely available for about $21.00.
