NYC Woman Mopes, Then Copes, With Issues Of Love and Hope

"Broken English" will debut on DVD August 21st, distributed by Magnolia Home Entertainment,

It's a romantic comedy that's a bittersweet and nuanced examination of hope, compromise and love.

Nora Wilder (Parker Posey), a thirty-something Manhattanite finds her quest for love consistently results in falling flat on her face. After a series of disastrous first dates, she meets Julien, a quirky Frenchman with an unabashed passion for living.

Inevitably, Nora discovers she must look inward before finding a new outlook on life and love. Cynical about romance and relationships, she pours herself into her work and struggles to ignore the admonitions of her best friend and overbearing mother.

The film marks the feature film debut of Zoe R. Cassavetes - daughter of legendary film maven John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands (who also appears in the film). 

"Broken English" co-stars Emmy-winner Drea de Matteo ("The Sopranos") as the happily married foil to Posey's romantic isolation, and Rowlands as the disapproving mother. The film also features a great supporting cast including Justin Theroux, Tim Guinee and Peter Bogdanovich.

Nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, "Broken English" is a quirky exploration of loneliness, love and everything in between.

Indie Treat: Neutral and Sweet

'Sweet Land," a love story set against the backdrop of the 1920s American immigrant experience, will arrive on DVD July 10th, distributed by  Fox Home Entertainment. 

This critically acclaimed independent film - named to Entertainment Weekly’s list of the 10 best movies of 2007-  has won multiple festival awards as well as an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature. 

Based on Will Weaver’s short story “A Gravestone Made of Wheat,” the film features touching performances from a terrific ensemble cast including Elisabeth Reaser, Tim Guinee, Alan Cumming, John Heard, Alex Kingston and Ned Beatty.

Inge (Reaser) is a feisty young German woman who has come to Minnesota to marry Olaf (Guinee), a young Norwegian immigrant farmer of few words. But in a post-WWI, anti-German climate, the local minister (Heard) openly forbids the marriage.

Inge and Olaf fall in love despite the town’s disapproval. But when the town banker (Beatty) attempts to foreclose on the farm of his friend Frandsen (Cumming), Olaf takes a stand...and the community unites around the young couple, finally accepting Inge as one of their own.

"Sweet Land" is a haunting tale of love, struggle and endurance with a view of America often overlooked by the history books.

Special features will include an audio commentary with director Ali Selim and cast members Elisabeth Reaser and Tim Guinee, a "making of" featurette and the original theatrical trailer.

As a side note, the producers would you like you to know that "Sweet Land" is the first ever "carbon neutral" film.

To reduce and neutralize the greenhouse gasses produced in the creation of the film, the director Ari Selim used sunlight instead of generators; the cast and crew carpooled to the set, the prouction bought fewer airline tickets by not flying people home on the weekends; and Selim efficiently scheduled the film by “shooting out” a location before moving the mini-city of 11 trucks and trailers, 40 cars and 95 cast and crew to the next location. 

After the shoot, every mile driven, every airline ticket, every gas receipt and every foot of film
processed was calculated and analyzed by scientists, who determined that "Sweet Land" still generated eight tons of CO2. 

So the production then invested in windmills in Jamaica and reforestation projects in Germany to offset the CO2, helping to “neutralize” the effects of the making of the film on the environment.

Advice On Making The Perfect Slice... For A Price

When two feuding pizza parlor owners square off in a decisive contest, their star-crossed kids learn all's fair in love - and pizza - in "A Tale of Two Pizzas,"  an award-winning romantic comedy which will arrive on DVD June 26th from Emerging Pictures and New Video NYC.

Borrowing equally from "Moonstruck" and  "Romeo and Juliet," this film festival favorite stars "Sopranos" cast members Vincent Pastore and Frank Vincent, along with Patti D'Arbanville.

There wasn't always bad blood between Vito Rossi (Pastore) and Frank Bianco (Vincent), the rival owners of two popular neighborhood pizza joints. Victor's Missing; Those He Knew Start Reminiscing

Montreal filmmaker Sophie Deraspe's first feature, "Missing Victor Pellerin" will hit store shelves on June 5th, the first of many original indie titles to be released by Atopia.

"Missing Victor Pellerin" is the story of a young painter and darling of the art scene who, in 1990, burns his work and disappears without a trace. Fifteen years later, Deraspe revisits the events that led to his disappearance, meeting the people who knew him, and who succumbed to his troubled personality.

Alternating between documentary and cinema vérité, "Missing Victor Pellerin" takes a close look at this charismatic character, exploring the contradictory points of view of those who knew him.

"Missing Victor Pellerin" has played in numerous international festivals and received a Special Mention by the Jury for it's unique and innovative directorial style at the 35th Festival of New Cinema in Montreal.

If On Changing Your Life You Insist, First Make A List

"Things To Do," the feature film debut for two Canadians, Theodore Bezaire (co-writer/director) and Mike Stasko (co-writer/star), will be released on DVD in the USA May 8th by Lifesize Entertainment.

The film is popular in Canada and received good reviews in extremely limited release in select U.S. cities, following its world premiere at Slamdance 2006 in Park City, Utah. 

"Things To Do" centers on a twenty-five year old office worker, Adam Stevenson (Mike Stasko), who decides to leave big city life behind and return to his small hometown to re-evaluate his life strategy. 

After a chance encounter at a grocery store, he reunites with Mac (Daniel Wilson) - an unusual acquaintance from his past - and the two promptly set out to complete a “Things To Do” list, a collection of random aspirations plucked from the gaps of their incomplete adolescence.

The film features a hip soundtrack with songs from Sufjan Stevens, Tobin Sprout, Joan of Arc and Jim O’Rourke and will carry a Suggested Retail Price of $24.98.

We haven't seen it, but the word on the street is that if you liked "Napoleon Dynamite" and "Office Space," you'll also enjoy "Things To Do."

Get On The Bus To Get Off

The director of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," John Cameron Mitchell, now  brings you "Shortbus," the story of numerous New York City-dwellers who come to an exclusive club to work  out problems in their sexual relationships

You Have A Right To Be Pissed After You're Downsized & Dismissed

When actress Annabelle Gurwitch was fired from a play by Woody Allen she wondered how she would cope with being fired by a cultural icon. Turning to friends in show business, like Tim Allen, Andy Dick, Sarah Silverman and others, she was assured she was not alone.

Once the subject had been broached, everyone she knew from her rabbi and gynecologists to her colleagues had advice and shared their own accounts of getting the boot. Gurwitch parlayed these stories into a book, a play and a film called "Fired!," which will be released on DVD May 15th by Shout! Factory.

Anna Nicole's Goal: Saving The World From Alien Control

If you thought Anna Nicole Smith was from another planet, you may have been right.

MTI Home Video has decided to continue with its plans to release "Illegal Aliens," which is the late Anna Nicole Smith's last feature film. The sci-fi comedy from Edgewood Studios will be available sometime in May.

"At first look, 'Illegal Aliens' appears to be just another low budget sci-fi comedy poking fun at Hollywood's big budget flicks," said the film's executive producer and actor, John James. "Now with the passing of it's star you'll find it to be replete with metaphors of her life. Anna invested in the production for her and her son, and was involved in creative aspects, adding numerous elements and rewrites for her character. This movie may just be the "Abbey Road" of films for Anna Nicole Smith fans."

The film itself is about three aliens who morph into "super-hot babes" and arrive to protect the earth from the intergalactic forces of evil. Guided by Syntax, their holographic mentor, these "Illegal Aliens" are willing to use every trick in the book - and apparently every sexy outfit in their wardrobe - to accomplish their mission.

The producers promise the film is is packed with high-energy action sequences, lowbrow spoofs, and the high-camp acting reminiscent of the classic B-movie genre... how else could they get away with Anna Nicole Smith saving the world?

We do wonder, however, whether "Illegal Aliens" simply pokes fun at today's Hollywood and pays tribute to the so-called "bad movies" we all love to hate or if indeed it is one of those movies.

In addition to Anna Nicole, the film stars Joanie Laurer, Lenise Soren, Gladys Jimenez, Patrick Burleigh, Dennis Lemoine, Mark 'Woody' Keppel, Michael J. Valentine and Kevin McGuire.

Anna Nicole Smith is also listed as one of the producers on the film, which was directed by David Giancola.

"Illegal Aliens" will be presented in full screen, with filmmaker commentary, a behind the scenes featurette, deleted scenes, bloopers, Spanish subtitles, and trailers.

The price and street date are still TBD; clearly MTI wanted to get this news out to capitalize on last week's surprising news of Ms. Smith's death. And shortly after they announced the DVD's release, news surfaced that Anna Nicole Smith's personal advance DVD screener copy of the movie was stolen, along with several other personal items.

The Feeling - and the DVD - Is "Mutual"

Home Vision Entertainment will bring "Mutual Appreciation" to DVD February 13th. 

The offbeat indie flick from Andrew Bujalski (who also did "Funny Ha Ha") follows Alan (Justin Rice, a real life musician in the band Bishop Allen), whose quest for success in music and love is hampered only by himself.

Centering on Alan's half-hearted romancing of radio DJ Sara (Seung-Min Lee) and promoting his fledgling band, the film is less a love story than an insightful and humorous portrayal of the art of awkwardness. A critical favorite, "Mutual Appreciation" is a cleverly written, timeless snapshot of post-college angst.

The DVD will include several unique special features: "Interjections and Observations from Parents of a Cast and Crew," which, they say, is the first DVD commentary ever to be recorded entirely by the parents of a film's cast and crew; "People's House", a short film written and directed by Andrew specifically for this DVD release and "Film Festival Dispatch in the Form of a Children's Book", a story about Andrew's preoccupation with Dutch dessert cookies written and illustrated by Andrew's friends.

Astoria Story: Life Plan Devised, Saints Recognized

"A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints," a coming-of-age drama about a boy growing up during the 1980s, will arrive on DVD February 20th.

The film tells the story of a pivotal summer on the hot, sweaty violent streets of Astoria, Queens in New York City – a summer that changed not only Dito Montiel, but the lives of everyone around him.

Torn between his ill father (Chazz Palminteri), his domineering friend and protector Antonio (Channing Tatum), the neighborhood war and the lustful temptations of youth, Dito (Shia LaBeouf as the young Dito and Robert Downey Jr. as the adult Dito) struggles against his desire to escape, running away from everything he knows.

Genius Products brings "The Puffy Chair" to DVD today.

The critically-acclaimed debut feature by filmmaker brothers Jay and Mark Duplass is a heartfelt family comedy that was all the rage at a number of film festivals a couple of years ago.

After finding a vintage Lazy Boy recliner online just like the one that used to grace his childhood living room, Josh decides to purchase the purple relic and deliver it to his father as a surprise birthday gift. (Josh is played by Mark Duplass, who also wrote the film.)

Josh's simple plan is suddenly complicated when his emotionally demanding girlfriend, Emily (Kathryn Aselton), and his granola-munching brother, Rhett (Rhett Wilkins) join him on the trip. On February 6th, Echo Bridge Home Entertainment will release the sexy romantic comedy, "Soup of the Day." This is a full-length feature film version of the hugely popular episodic Internet series that attracted 9 million online page views last year.

In addition to the feature film, the "Soup of the Day" DVD will offer approximately three hours of bonus footage. The DVD extras will include bloopers and deleted scenes, filmmaker commentary, cast interviews, 19 original webisodes, and a never-before-seen alternate ending.

"Soup of the Day" is the story of one guy in committed relationships with three girlfriends.

MTI Home Video will release writer/director Henry Jaglom's "Going Shopping" on February 27th.

"Going Shopping" is a mockumentary dealing with the phenomenon of women's addiction - good and bad, happy and troubled - to, well, shopping.

Holly G. is a successful clothing designer with her own boutique. In the course of a tumultuous Mother's Day weekend she is confronted with deceit, elation, desperation, kleptomania, rebellion, addiction and passion, all the while under pressure to save her business and family.

The comedy is peppered with poignant testimonials from the woman within the film who "confess" the real and all too often unacknowledged role that shopping plays in their lives.

"Going Shopping" is a sister film to Jaglom's critically acclaimed "Eating" and "Baby Fever," which both depict pertinent issues contemporary women face, and in some cases, obsess over. Philosopher of Filth

Netflix announced late last week the DVD debut of the John Waters performance film "This Filthy World," which will be available exclusively on Netflix beginning December 12th.

Starring filmmaker John Waters in a filmed version of his one-man monologue, "This Filthy World" is directed by Jeff Garlin (TV's "Curb Your Enthusiasm") and produced by Red Envelope Entertainment, a content acquisition division of Netflix.

Filmed earlier this year over two nights at the Harry De Jur Playhouse in New York, "This Filthy World" captures an irreverent stand-up/nightclub routine that John Waters has been developing and changing over the course of 35 years.

Alarming but never mean-spirited, the film captures Waters' insights on everything from the director's own childhood to his obsession with Michael Jackson, capital punishment, artistic censorship and why he always admired the Wicked Witch of the West more than Dorothy.

Red Envelope Entertainment is a new division of Netflix, the online DVD rental service, created to ensure that Netflix members have access to a wide variety of films. Warner To Distribute Quality Urban Cinema

Warner Home Video and Film Life Inc., a leader in independent Black and urban-inspired cinema, have announced a partnership that will brand and distribute high quality urban films on DVD.

Per the exclusive arrangement, Warner will distribute new films under the "American Black Film Festival" label. The ABFF, a property of Film Life, is the leading showcase for the best of contemporary Black cinema.

No titles have yet been announced.

Saints Come Marching In

This Summer, "The Daily Show's" Rob Corddry and a team of improv all-stars  give new meaning to the term "splatter" film.

On July 25th, Shout! Factory will release the film festival favorite, "Blackballed: The Bobby Dukes Story." Starring Corddry, this wonderfully silly mockumentary is the story of Bobby Dukes, paintball’s first superstar, who returns to the game to prove himself after a scandalous fall from grace.

Every sport needs a hero, and in the paintball hungry ‘90s, Bobby Dukes was the first. With his explosive style and unmatched charisma, he was well on his way to leading his team, The River Rats, to an unprecedented fourth “Classic” victory when the unthinkable happened.

Bobby, attempting one of his signature moves, was shot. Desperate to stay in the game, he intentionally wiped the paint from his jersey, thus committing paintball’s most heinous crime, “wiping.”

And, after an overzealous referee ejected Bobby, the three-time champ was banned from the sport for ten years and became the laughing stock of the paintball community. Deemed a cheater, disgraced and humiliated, he had no choice but to disappear.

Ten years later, an older and wiser Bobby returns to reclaim his title and erase the memory of his tainted past. He enters the Hudson Valley Paintball Classic but finds no self-respecting paintball player will be caught dead on his team.

On the verge of giving up hope, he joins forces with the most unlikely of allies: the referee that caught him cheating. Now, the two improbable partners must recruit a team of paintball misfits and take back the paintball title.

Bursting with determination, redemption and plenty of hardcore paintball action, "Blackballed: The Bobby Dukes Story," can currently be seen in limited release around the country in art house cinemas.

The DVD will feature commentary with the filmmakers and cast (Corddry, Paul Scheer, Rob Riggle), outtakes and deleted scenes and the featurette, “Around the World with Bobby Dukes."
