"Dreamgirls" Unfurls On May 1st

"Dreamgirls," winner of two Academy Awards and three Golden Globes, will arrive on DVD in a Single Disc Edition, a 2-Disc "Showstopper Edition" and on Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD May 1st from Paramount Home Entertainment.

Director Bill Condon’s adaptation of Michael Bennett’s Broadway musical tells the story of three female singers who learn that anything is possible when you hold on to your dreams. It's a rich and vivid tale of fame, fortune and the sacrifices they demand.

The film stars Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé Knowles, Golden Globe winner Eddie Murphy and former American Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson in a role that won her an Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role.

The "Dreamgirls Showstopper Edition," Blu-ray and HD DVD discs will feature a wealth of bonus materials: 12 extended and alternate scenes, including a DVD-exclusive, never-before-seen performance by Hudson of “Effie Sing My Song,” a feature-length documentary entitled “Building the Dream” presented in nine chapters, a music video directed by Bill Condon for Beyoncé’s Oscar-nominated song “Listen," behind-the-scenes featurettes on the costume design, editing and lighting of the film, cast member auditions and screen tests, previsualization sequences and more.

The Single Disc Edition will feature the 12 extended and alternate scenes, plus the music video.

The Suggested Retail Price for "Dreamgirls" will be $29.99 (Single Disc), $34.99 (2-Disc Showstopper Edition) and $39.99 (Blu-ray/HD DVD). Actual "street prices" will vary, but are expected to be about $21.00, $25.00 and $28.00, respectively.

Curiously, Amazon.com is also listing the title with a Suggested Retail Price of $1439.52, which they've thoughtfully knocked down to only $1007.99. Those must be some special features... for that price, I'd expect Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy to both show up at my house and perform their musical numbers live.

Fox Deploys "Boys" In April

"The History Boys," in which a group of  brilliant, yet unruly British schoolboys pursue sex, sport and knowledge, will make its way to DVD on April 17th, distributed by Fox Home Entertainment.

Nominated for four British Independent Film Awards including Best  Actress (Frances de la Tour), Best Screenplay and two nods for Most Promising Newcomer (Samuel Barnett and Dominic Cooper), "The History Boys" is based on the celebrated stage play that ran at the National Theatre in London for over a year and then went on to conquer Broadway, closing last Fall just as the film premiered in theaters in the UK.

The show won more Tony Awards than any other play in the past  50 years, including Best Featured Actress (de la Tour), Best Director (Nicholas Hytner), Best Leading Actor (Richard Griffiths) and Best Play.

I was fortunate enough to see the play in both London and New York and can attest that the already stunning performances only grew richer over time. It's rare to have a stage ensemble transfer intact to the screen and for that reason alone, this film is a treat.

A complex coming-of-age tale in the tradition of "Dead Poets Society" and "Stand And Deliver," "The History Boys" deftly balances the tragedy of youth’s shattered illusions with a great deal of acerbic humor. 

Mentored by two teachers, an astute young teaching novice and an insightful old eccentric, and watched by a results-obsessed headmaster, eight working class boys share one seemingly impossible dream: to gain admittance into England’s most exclusive and prestigious universities.

Adapted from the original play and starring the original cast, "The History Boys" is an engaging,  thought-provoking and wickedly funny look at history, the pursuit of knowledge, and the utter randomness of life.

On DVD, the film will be presented in widescreen (1.85:1) with audio in English (Dolby Digital 5.1) and Spanish (Dolby Surround), along with English, French and Spanish subtitles.

Special features will include two behind-the-scenes featurettes and audio commentary by Director Nicolas Hytner and playwright and screenwriter Alan Bennett.

"Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo+Juliet," a contemporary and unconventional re-telling of William Shakespeare’s classic love story, will return to DVD in a new "Music Edition" distributed by Fox Home Entertainment on February 6th.

The "Romeo+Juliet: Music Edition" will contain an array of bonus materials produced by Bazmark Inc. (writer/producer/director Baz Luhrmann’s production company) including three new audio commentaries (including one by Luhrmann), a comprehensive 40 minute documentary that will take you on an exploration of the soundtrack creation – a crucial part of the film’s creative success – with music producing icons Craig Armstrong and Marius DeVries, three new “Journey of The Song” featurettes and the Music Machine, a juke box function that takes you to your favorite music in the film.

This wildly inventive contemporary adaptation of one of Shakespeare's best known plays features  performances from Claire Daines (Juliet), Leonardo DiCaprio (Romeo), John Leguizamo, Harold Perrineau, Paul Rudd, Jamie Kennedy and Pete Postlethwaite.

Liz and Dick Flicks

After Bogie and Bacall, but before Brad and Angelina or Tom and Katie… there was Liz and Dick, the ‘60s most famous on-and off-screen couple.

Warner Home Video will honor these two cinematic legends on December 5th with the debut of "The Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton Film Collection."

Featured will be the 5-time Oscar-winning landmark film, "Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" in a new 2-Disc Special Edition, along with the DVD debuts of "The Sandpiper," "The V.I.P.s" and "The Comedians."

The 5-Disc boxed set will carry a Suggested Retail Price of $49.92, although the actual street price should be closer to $35.00.  "Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" will also be made available as a 2-Disc Special Edition, priced at $26.99 (with an expected street price of about $19.00).

Highlights of the Collection’s special features will include - for "Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" - new commentary by director Mike Nichols (with Steven Soderbergh), three featurettes about the movie and a 1966 interview with Nichols.

Hines on Tap

The same day Sony Pictures Home Entertainment brings "White Nights" to DVD, they will also debut "Tap." Both films star Gregory Hines and both are being released on DVD for the first time August 29th.

Originally brought tot he screen in 1989, "Tap" features Hines and fellow dance great Sammy Davis Jr. in their only on screen appearance together. Cameo performances are supplied by world renowned dancers Bunny Briggs, Steve Condos, Arthur Duncan, a very young Savion Glover (in his first film role), Pat Rico, Howard ‘Sandman’ Sims, Jimmy Slyde and Harold Nicholas.

Just days out of prison Max Washington (Hines) returns to his old haunt and his old ways immediately getting involved in a jewel heist with a local crime boss. Always the man with the moves, he revisits an old girlfriend (Suzanne Douglas) and her father Little Mo (Davis Jr.) who has designs on bringing Max into his new tap show.

However, the lure of the life of crime and big payoffs tempt the street-wise Max, and he utilizes his cunning moves on and off the dance floor to cause a ruckus.

The DVD will include new interviews with director Nick Castle, producer (and Gregory Hines' manager) Fran Saperstein, Savion Glover and famous tap dancers from days-gone-by: Bunny Briggs, Jimmy Slyde and Henry LeTang, plus vintage footage with Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis Jr.

Offendors Render Theatrical Splendor

The award-winning documentary, "Shakespeare Behind Bars" - about an all-male Shakespearean theatre company composed of convicted felons doing hard time - will arrive on DVD July 18th from Shout! Factory.

"Shakespeare Behind Bars" premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and won the Special Jury Prize at the Independent Film Festival of Boston.

The film follows a group of men enrolled in a theatre program at the Luther Luckett Correctional Complex in Kentucky. Over the span of a year, the cameras follow this cast of convicted felons as they rehearse and perform a full production of "The Tempest" under the direction of Curt Tofteland.

Marking their seventh year as an acting ensemble, the inmates cast themselves in relation to their crimes and as a result, murderers play murderers, and thieves play thieves. The inmates delve into personal experience to bring these Shakespearean characters to life.

Ultimately, the film explores the universal themes of redemption, transformation and forgiveness.

The film’s theatrical run garnered much praise from the critics: “remarkable” (New York Times), “uplifting” (NY Daily News), and “an immensely moving tribute to the power of art” (The Seattle Times).

The DVD will feature over 45 minutes of bonus material, including deleted scenes, prisoner updates, and bonus performance footage. Three full length audio commentaries will provide insight from the filmmakers (Hank Rogerson and Jilann Spitzmiller of Philomath Films), program founder/artistic director, and four of the murderers, fugitives and thieves (and worse) who participated in the program.

Liza With A "D"

The "D," of course, stands for "DVD."

And "Liza With A Z: A Concert For Television" will indeed come to DVD for the first time ever on April 4th from Showtime Entertainment.

In 1972, Liza Minnelli and Bob Fosse took the Oscars by storm for the movie of the Broadway  musical "Cabaret."  (He directed; she starred.) That same year, the two paired up again to create a spectacular TV program - "Liza With A Z" - which went on to win 4 Emmys and a Peabody award.

The special - not shown commercially in over thirty years - has been taken out of the vault, dusted off and can be seen on the Showtime premium TV network on March 31st.

Four days later, a DVD of the concert will be made available, completely restored and remastered.

Special features include a conversation with Liza at the Toronto Film Festival premiere, an interview conducted by Liza with John Kander, composer of "Chicago" and "Cabaret," candid, full-length program commentary by Liza herself, Liza's performance at the 2005 GLAAD Awards, never-before-seen footage of "Mein Herr," the A&E Television Biography of Liza and more.

There is, in fact, about four hours of material in this set, although the concert portion only runs 55 minutes. But that in itself is rather remarkable. Just think... back in 1972, an hour of prime time programming had only five minutes of commercials!

"Liza With A Z" will actually be a value-priced 2-Disc DVD/CD combo (with the second disc being the soundtrack on audio CD). Suggested Retail Price will be $29.99, but many stores will be selling this for $20.00 or less.

Brooks' Schnooks

Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick reprise their Tony Award-winning roles in "The Producers," which Universal Studios Home Entertainment will bring to DVD on May 16th.

Directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman, the Tony Award-winning director and choreographer of the original Broadway production, "The Producers" DVD will include more of the musical numbers seen in the smash hit Broadway show, along with feature commentary by the director, deleted scenes, outtakes and more.

Written by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan, with music and lyrics by Brooks, the supporting cast for this musical film - based on a musical stage play based on Brooks' original movie - includes Uma Thurman and Will Ferrell.

In "The Producers," scheming theatrical producer Max Bialystock (Lane) and his mousy accountant, Leo Bloom (Broderick), discover that under the right circumstances they could make more money by producing a Broadway flop than they could with a hit.  So they entice investors with a scheme that's literally too good to be true.

"Springtime for Hitler, A Gay Romp with Adolf and Eva at Berchtesgaden," their unbelievably tasteless musical ode to the Third Reich, includes dancing stormtroopers forming a Busby Berkeley-style swastika and lyrics imploring us to support the Fuhrer's cause: "Don't be stupid, be a smarty. Come and join the Nazi party."

When the show unexpectedly becomes a comedy sensation, the two would be con men find themselves facing an entirely different dilemma.

One of the most beloved musicals of all time returns to DVD on April 25th, with the release of "Guys and Dolls: The Deluxe Edition."

Starring Hollywood legends Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Jean Simmons and original Broadway cast members Vivian Blaine and Stubby Kaye, "Guys and Dolls" was nominated for four Academy Awards and received a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture–Musical/Comedy and Best Actress, Jean Simmons.

This new Deluxe Edition from MGM and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will contain all-new special features including a two-part documentary which will have interviews with producer Samuel Goldwyn and key crew members, as well as a collectible reproduction of the original theatrical solicitation materials created by Samuel Goldwyn and MGM for the 1955 theatrical run.

This one-of-a-kind 72-page booklet will include original press-clippings, theater cards, posters, biographies and highlights from the film’s premiere engagements in New York and Los Angeles.

In "Guys and Dolls," based on the stories of Damon Runyon, the slickest big-time New York City gamblers, Sky Masterson (Brando) and Nathan Detroit (Sinatra), can’t resist making or taking a bet on anything. In fact, Detroit runs "the oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York" and he is in desperate need of a thousand bucks to secure a location for the weekend game.

When a pretty missionary (Simmons) sets up shop in the neighborhood, Nathan makes a wager of  $1,000 that Sky can’t seduce her. But all bets are off when Sky winds up falling madly in love.

"Guys and Dolls" is one of the most perfect Broadway musicals ever created, although it suffered considerably in the translation to the big screen by the miscasting of Sinatra and Brando. But with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, "Guys and Dolls" features an outstanding score, including the show-stopping hits, “Luck Be a Lady," “Sit Down, You're Rockin' The Boat" and the title tune.

This film also marked the musical debut of Marlon Brando (singing songs you can't refuse).

Claim Million Dollar Prize When Lover Dies?

Part Sunset Boulevard, part Greek tragedy, "The Dying Gaul" arrives on DVD March 21st.

The film - a tale of lust, power, corruption, betrayal and revenge set in the seductive world of the Hollywood elite - stars Patricia Clarkson, Peter Sarsgaard and Campbell Scott. "The Dying Gaul" also marks the directorial debut of Craig Lucas (the film is based on his stage play of the same name).

Robert Sandrich, a fledgling screenwriter (Sarsgaard) who has been living on the fringe, finds his life changed when he is offered a million dollars for his latest and most personal work –  "The Dying Gaul " - a raw, autobiographical story of the death of his male lover.

There's just one catch – the studio demands that Robert change his dead lover’s character from a man to a woman to make the story more commercially viable. Making the offer is Jeffrey (Scott), a smooth, ruthless and sexually avaricious studio executive who seduces Robert with the intoxicating Hollywood cocktail of power, money and sex.

When Robert confides to Jeffrey’s wife, Elaine (Clarkson) that he finds solace, both sexual and emotional, in the ghost-like world of chat rooms, the curious Elaine meets him there anonymously. As their online dialogue unfolds, she discovers that Robert and her husband are having an affair.

The shock of that revelation – and the unexpected way she responds – sets off a dangerous series of deceptions, confessions and betrayals.

"The Dying Gaul" was nominated for the Grand Jury Award at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and was an Official Selection of the 2005 Montreal and 2005 Berlin Film Festivals.

Bonus features on the DVD will include deleted scenes and an alternate ending. The film will be presented in widescreen, with English audio in Dolby Digital 5.1.

Tenants' Lament

More details have emerged about "Rent," which will be released on DVD in a 2-Disc Special Edition on February 21st from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

The landmark musical became a cultural phenomenon when it debuted on the New York stage and will celebrate its 10th Anniversary on Broadway this Spring.

The Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning musical recently arrived on the big screen in a film directed by Chris Columbus and starring Rosario Dawson, Tracie Thoms and original Broadway cast members Taye Diggs, Anthony Rapp, Jesse L. Martin, Idina Menzel, Wilson Jermaine Heredia (winner of a Tony for his role in the Broadway production) and Adam Pascal.

This 2-Disc Special Edition will be available both in widescreen and full screen formats and will arrive complete with over three hours of special features.

These will include include director and cast commentary, five deleted scenes and musical performances, as well as a five-part feature length documentary entitled "No Day But Today."

The documentary  chronicles the life of "Rent" author and composer Jonathan Larson and the journey of the musical from its Off-Broadway beginnings to its wild success on Broadway and around the world, and most recently, its release as a major motion picture.

Loosely based on Puccini’s "La Boheme," "Rent" paints a modern day portrait of a group of friends struggling to live and pay their rent against the gritty background of New York’s East Village while holding fast to their bohemian ideals and pursuits.

Confronting poverty, addiction, illness and the AIDS epidemic, these young artists strive for gain and acceptance, and above all, connection to their world and each other.

The DVD will feature English and French audio (both in Dolby Digital 5.1).  SRP will be $28.96, but this title will be heavily discounted. Expect to pay only about sixteen dollars.

Tennessee Vaults

"The Tennessee Williams Film Collection"- an 8-Disc set containing the acclaimed film adaptations of one of America’s greatest playwrights – leaps straight from the vaults at Warner Home Video to DVD on May 2nd.

All That Regurgitated Jazz

Winner of six Academy Awards®, including Best Picture, "Chicago"  will be available in a new 2-Disc  Miramax "Razzle-Dazzle" Collector's Edition on December 20th.

This new "definitive" version of the hit film on DVD - postponed from earlier this year - will come with hours of never-before-seen bonus materials (including several featurettes dealing with the original Broadway cast, the history of the show and the transition from stage to screen). Included will be:

OK, great, it's a fantastic film and it certainly deserves a bunch of new extras... but what about all of us who already own the film?

Fans who dutifully shelled out $16 - $20 when the film was first released onto shiny discs back in 2003 have been left out in the cold once again. Unless, of course, we buy yet another copy of a movie we already own, when really all we need is the second disc that contains the new extras.

As a lifelong film fan and theatregoer (who actually saw the original production on Broadway back in 1975 and the still-running concert revival that sparked interest in the movie), I'm eager to see every one of these new extras.

But c'mon, you're killing me here! I already own the film on DVD and see little value in buying it once again, especially since the film itself hasn't been recut (nor should it be). Why do studios insist on repackaging and remarketing these titles over and over?

It's one thing if they come out with a "basic" or movie-only edition and announce that there'll be a more exciting Special Commemorative Limited Collector's Edition down the road. it's quite another to wait two years and only then deliver umpteen special features that any self-respecting early-adopter is going to want. Under that first scenario, a fan has a choice. Under the second scenario, he or she is being bled dry.

This madness must end!

Anyway, for the record, "Chicago" stars Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger and Richard Gere, and features Queen Latifah and Lucy Liu headlining a topnotch singing and dancing ensemble.

The time is 1929... the city’s hot with murder... passion... fame... sex... And All That Jazz.

The Windy  City’s promise of adventure and opportunity dazzle Roxie Hart (Zellweger), who wishes to follow in the golden footsteps of sensational vaudeville performer Velma Kelly (Zeta-Jones).  Roxie gets her wish  when some very wrong steps land both the star and starlet in prison for separate murder charges.

Under the  crooked care of the prison’s Matron Morton (Latifah), Roxie meets up with legendary lawyer Billy Flynn  (Gere).  Roxie’s career skyrockets, but the clever Miss Kelly has some surprises left for her second act. 

Zeta-Jones won the Oscar® for Best Supporting Actress (2002) for "Chicago,"  while Zellweger won the  Golden Globe® for Best Actress and Gere won the Golden Globe® for Best Actor.

The new "Razzle-Dazzle" Edition of the film is presented in 1.85:1 widescreen, enhanced for 16 X 9 TV sets, with Dolby® Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 Digital Surround Sound. The film comes with English, French and Spanish audio and Spanish subtitles.

Retail is $29.99, but you should be able to knock nine or ten dollars off that price by shopping around. You can also still find the original single disc edition for about $13.00. (Hell, I'll sell you my gently used copy for $10 and then I'll go and buy the new one!)

Valentine's Day "Proof"

"Proof," the critically-acclaimed film based on the Pulitzer-Prize and Tony Award®-winning Broadway play, arrives on DVD February 14th. Included will be a director's audio commentary, deleted scenes and a behind-the-scenes featurette.

It'll be a widescreen edition, in 2.35:1 aspct ratio (formatted for 16x9 TV screens), with Dolby® Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, English and French audio and Spanish subtitles.

Rated PG-13, with a suggested retail price of $29.99.

The film stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins, Jake Gyllenhaal and Hope Davis and was directed by John Madden, director of “Shakespeare In Love.”

The screenplay is by David Auburn (adapted from his play, with Rebecca Miller) and deals with family conflicts surrounding issues of truth, love, genius and aging.
