When TiVo launched its first high definition recorder back in September of last year, the main criticism was price. At a Suggested Retail of eight hundred bucks, the "TiVo Series 3 HD Digital Media Recorder" was far too expensive, even for some early adopters.
But today TiVo announced a new high definition DVR offering most of the key features of the earlier model at a much lower price. Starting today, you can pre-order TiVo HD at www.tivo.com for just $299.99. The new DVR is expected to ship in early August.
The TiVo HD will double as a digital cable ready set-top-box that will work seamlessly with any cable provider in the U.S. and is designed to fit with home entertainment centers, replacing cable boxes while complementing other entertainment devices. It is compatible with digital cable, analog cable and digital antenna).
The new box will offer 20 hours of HD (compared to 35 hours on the previous model) or up to 180 hours of standard definition content. You'll be able to record two HD channels at the same time, while watching a third previously recorded show.
With a built-in ethernet jack, two CableCARD slots and USB ports, TiVo HD also provides advanced connectivity and easy networking,enabling you to have access top advanced features like movie and TV downloads from Amazon.com, Home Movie Sharing and universal Swivel search.
